Computers

Computers have been a core component of Daviceroy's life. Starting with a very old Aquarius without a hard drive and a tape recorder to "save" programs. Over time, I've owned quite a few different computers... as well as repaired and built computers for myself and others. For a while, I did so under the company name of "Viceroy's Interactive".

As one point, I was a Microsoft and AMD Reseller. During this time period, I made a number of custom machines for my clients based upon their needs and not just what I wanted for them. Part of the fundamental problem that some in the technology field have is that they assume everyone wants the greatest, newest thing now. For a lot of people, they just need basics to enjoy email, chat, and the web. With that said, there are always the gaming rigs that need to be made with a lot of horsepower for the ever evolving gaming culture.

I've owned everything from a very basic server to a gaming rig. I've also enjoyed beta testing for Microsoft, RedHat, and other companies. From time to time, people ask me which companies/components I recommend for others.

Recommendation 1: AMD

Why AMD? In short, AMD has built a processor similar to the Intel architecture, but also has a strong connection to the graphical processor world thanks partly due to their acquisition of different companies/patents. In many comparisons, AMD has either met or exceeded Intel. The price point tends to be in favor of AMD as well. I've had both Intel and AMD processors and prefer the AMD ones.

Recommendation 2: Linux

Why Linux? In short, it's open source, free, and easy to get into. Some people will try to tell you that Linux isn't for Newbies. Frankly, I don't get that. I set up a Linux RedHat system for someone who had used Windows all their life. They were able to use it for what they used their windows system. Do I prefer a particular flavor of Linux? I tend to prefer Ubuntu, but have used a few different flavors including Redhat. Some of my friends say Gentoo, but that's more for those who desire to customize their system down to every little detail.

Recommendation 3: Android

I've used iOS and Android before. Why Android? iOS tends to be on devices that are overpriced. There really isn't any entry level phones/tablets. For the price of one apple device, I can get two Android. Also, for those not aware, Android is a version of Linux designed by Google for mobile devices. They contribute to the Linux Community (a win win) while getting fixes from the general community as well.
