Defender of the Faith (Part III)

Chapter 1

Upon his return, Wilfred went to the tavern, after stopping at the jeweler. He had been saving for a while for this moment, and he was going to keep his promise to Beth. He picked out a solid gold band as the engagement band for her. After buying the ring, he happily ran off towards the tavern.

When he arrived at the tavern, he saw Beth with her beautiful smile in her dress as a waitress. When she finished delivering food to the family that was there she ran up to him. It was early evening, as the sun was nearing the end of its apparent journey in the sky, for the day. She saw that he had a big smile on his face. She smiled herself, wondering what was happening, and then she saw him drop to one knee and take out a beautiful ring.

"I have returned safe and sound from my adventure. Will you marry me, Beth Houser?" he asked.

"Yes, of course I will," Beth said ecstatically as he placed the ring on her finger.

The whole tavern cheered at them. Rarely did two people deserve love more in their eyes. After all, these two people were not wealthy by any means, and were both solid and good people. For the rest of her shift, everyone was dancing and drinking and having fun in honor of the beautiful and normally melancholy waitress, and the similarly melancholy and scholarly young cleric. Some old grizzled man brought some bagpipes and played a happy tune.

After her shift was over Wilfred and Beth returned to his place. As soon as they walked in the door they kissed each other passionately. They knew that in the other person was what they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with. Beth was so relieved that Wilfred had returned safe and sound from his trip to the Viceroy's Palace. They melted into each other's arms as they went down to lie on the bed.

"I'm so glad to see you once again. It's seemed like forever since I was able to taste your sweet kisses," Wilfred said.

"And it has been forever since I could feel you in my pores," Beth said. "I hope it feels this wonderful the rest of my life."

"I hope so too," Wilfred replied.

The moon shone brightly through the window on top of their two pale bodies. For a few minutes the two of them just kissed and made out with each other without speaking, just moaning and breathing heavily. After a while the two started talking to each other again.

"How did your journey go?" Beth asked.

"It went well. While I had some problems at first, and kept on getting followed around by two loud-mouthed spies, it was a worthwhile journey," Wilfred replied.

"That's good. Did you find what you wanted?" Beth asked.

"Absolutely. I thought that the mages had been given immortality, but though they had been given a longer life span by far than normal human beings, their powers as mages were conferred from one to another of the same personality. The mages die just like normal human beings, though they live exceedingly long before they pass away," Wilfred said.

"That is really interesting. So these mages are just normal human beings, basically?" Beth asked in astonishment.

"Yes. They have different personalities. It is interesting how they each divide up a portion of the power and personality of God. They are really humorous together. Some are more talkative than others, some like humans more than others, each has their own strengths and weaknesses, but together they are quite a force. I am glad I was able to talk to them after my research was completed," Wilfred said smilingly.

"That's good to hear. So, will you present your defense soon?" Beth asked.

"Yes, I will. We should find out soon if I am to get my doctorate. I do not think it will be a problem. I am more concerned about where I will go afterward than about whether I am to pass," Wilfred replied.

"Are all Bravians this brave?" Beth said, jokingly.

"Absolutely," Wilfred said, smiling back.

After a slight pause, Beth asked, "When do you think the wedding should be?"

"I think it should be in about two months or so. What do you think about that?" Wilfred replied.

"I think that is a good idea. There is no need to wait long. Once you get your job, the wedding can be held there easily, right?" Beth asked.

"Yes, that is true. Often times clerics get free weddings thanks to their service," Wilfred said.

"That's good to know. It's not like we will have a lot of money for this," Beth replied.

"Yes, I have some family to invite from Cork, but that will not take long to receive by SMS," Wilfred said.

"I wish I had family to invite. They have long since died or left me behind. After all I did for them working they want nothing to do with me," Beth said sadly.

"That is their loss, you are a wonderful young lady, and you do not have to feel bad about them. Just live your own life," Wilfred replied.

"Thanks, you are so sweet to me," Beth said with tears in her eyes.

"You deserve all of it," Wilfred said before the two went to sleep.
