Memories (Part I)

Chapter 1

Memories - they float throughout our whole lives. Some get stuck in them. Others ignore them. In your memory, time can stand still. It can be pushed to whatever time you want. Were you happier two days ago or two years ago? It doesn't matter since you can put your memory of two years ago as your focus.

I remember so much happiness in my life. I never expected to meet him. I never expected to fall in love. Sure, I had many people telll me at one point or another that it could happen, but I always assumed it wouldn't happen to me. After all, why should it? I was happy by myself. Life was good. Yes, it could ahve been better, but it definately could have been worse.

My existance, my life, was going well enough. Then, he came along. he walked into the pub my parents owned. He had those soul touching eyes that showed his zest for life. he had that simple smile that greeted the whole room. He had the sillest sense of humor I had seen. Most importantly, he showed me respect that was rare in these times.

I remember first meeting him. He was odd to say the least. Entering the pub, he sat down at a table. I came over and said, "Good Morning." He nodded and smiled. "Good is a relative term. I would prefer an afternoon to a morning, but it's nice to see someone in good spirits," he commented. There was a twinkle in his eyes.

I watched him as he ordered and treated the waitress with the same sort of respect. Off and on for the next few months, we flirted back and forth. He was an attractive guy. I figured there was no harm in it. Did I think something may come of it? No really. He seemed like a friendly guy who flirted a lot, but I didn't realize then how much he began to notice me. I've been told several times by several people that I am oblivious to noticing it.

Sometimes, it has to be brought up to me. One night while I was working, the bartender told me that there was someone who was staring at me. At first, I thought he was teasing me as was his custom. However, he pointed my attention towards the offending party. I smiled and waved at the guilty party. "He likes you," the bartender commented. That was one of the first times I began to notice the attention he gave me.

I wondered to myself whather he was available or not. He seemed like a nice guy. He didn't wear a wedding band and it didn't appear as if he was taken. Certain feelings started playing with my mind. Yeah, I knew there was some sort of interest on his part - and definately some on my part.

We started chatting more often and spending time together. I remember one particular night he came into the pub. he was tired after a long day. We were the only ones left except for the barkeeper who was reading a book called "Where We Belong". We just chatted for hours about everything and nothing. What caught me offguard was when he just blurted out, "I find you attractive." I wasn't expecting it at all.

All sorts of things came into my mind. Time stood still. Had this mand really said that? It's true that he had made comments before that I was pretty, but wasn't he just flirting? My heart was beating a million beats per second. My breath was caught in the moment. The world around me stood frozen and motionless.

"I find you attractive, too," my lips uttered. I watched as a smile slowly crossed his face. Time once again returned to its normal pace. The moment was gone, but the great thing about memories is that it can be replayed over and over again - which is something I did often.
