Chapter 3
The next morning the three of them helped out with the check-in. Glad to get their teenage children off their hands, the parents of the remaining 27 children, 13 aristocratic girls, all prissy and haughty, and one fairly nice aristocratic young lady, as well as 13 horny young lads obsessed with sex and violence. Daniel looked at the crowd and wondered if he was truly alone in the world. There was no one like him in the group. It was a bad sign.
Cherie and Henry were having a better time in their jobs. They were all dressed in the school uniforms, and the crowd was full of that adolescent posturing. The guys were trying to outdo each others in machismo, all bragging about their various deeds. The young women were also establishing their hierarchy in their own way, through shallow conversation and gossip and badtalking. Daniel looked rather forlorn, because this was the same old stuff he had dealt with for years, only with more skilled practitioners than the clumsy rural folk he had grown up with.
"Hey, what are those dorky clothes you are wearing?" one smarmy noble said to Daniel.
"These are the school uniforms you will be wearing for the next four years, so I would shut my lip and get used to it if I were you," Daniel said in his customary accent.
"Temper, temper. I was just joking around with you," the noble replied.
"There are some things you do not joke about," Daniel replied curtly.
"I would not know," sniped the noble. "I joke about everything about other people, but no one had better joke about me." The noble walked off.
"Do you see those guys over there," one noble girl said to another. "No one told me there would be so many hotties around here. I thought this would be a school for nerds."
"Why did you think that? After all, this is an imperial school, and everyone knows that success is not measured by intelligence, but by looks and charm and the money and connections one has," the girl replied.
"That is true. I had thought that the Directrix was a more scholarly fellow than most. I do not seem him here yet," the first girl responded.
"There are only two people who do not look like they really belong in a school like this. See that freckled boy over there, and that shy girl?" the second girl asked.
"Yes, I see them," the first girl replied.
"They are going to be the class outcasts. I can see it now," the second girl said rather condescendingly.
"Who is that pretty girl over there," one awed young man said to Henry.
"You mean Cherie, the heiress of Longbert?" Henry replied.
"Yes, the pretty brunette with the big breasts," the young man replied.
"That is my girlfriend," Henry replied.
"Have you, um, done anything with her yet?" the young man asked.
"Yes, I have kissed her, made out with her, and had sex with her," Henry replied matter-of-factly.
"You the man," the young man said in admiration.
"I think Henry and that boy are talking about me," Cherie said to Daniel.
"Because they are looking at you and pointing and appearing very proud of themselves?" Daniel replied.
"Yes, and I am sure Henry is bragging about the fact that we had sex last night," Cherie said shyly.
"Yes, Henry told me what he was going to do before going over to your room last night," Daniel said sadly.
"Why are you sad, Daniel?" Cherie said.
"I am sad because you are a wonderful girl, and I wish I could be as lucky as he is," Daniel said. "You are far too beautiful and sweet for someone like me to expect to ever have, for even the farmers' daughters have rejected me, how could I expect to be with ladies like you?"
"You are very sweet," Cherie said as she kissed him gently on the cheek. "Anyway, I had better check on my boyfriend to make sure he is not exaggerating about me."
"Have fun," Daniel said.
"I will," Cherie replied. She walked towards Henry.
"Hello, I do not know anyone here," the shy aristocratic girl said to Daniel.
"Well, my name is Daniel Miller. I am from the area of Cork," he replied. "Now you know at least one person here." He smiled at her.
"Thank you. My name is Delia Sanchez. I am from Puria," she replied.
"I have never met a Purian before," Daniel said. "I have spent my entire life in rural Bravia. This is my first time out of my hometown. My parents were always too poor to travel much."
"I have never met a Bravian either. I did not travel because my parents did not think it safe to go outside of their estate outside of the city of Puria. Too many problems with the government, they said," Delia replied.
"Do you want to go outside in the courtyard and talk together some more, where it is more private?" Daniel said.
"I would love to," Delia said with a wink. They walked outside.
"I see you were talking about me," Cherie said as she tapped Henry on the shoulder.
"Of course I was. This young man here wanted to know how close the two of us are," Henry replied suavely.
"I see," Cherie said smiling.
At this point a stern old man wearing the silken robes of the clergy came in and everyone naturally got quiet. He looked like some kind of patriarch with his long beard and white hair and fierce eyes. He looked at the young people and started talking down to them.
"I am the resident clergyman for this school, and from the looks of the cute little couple I saw kissing outside and you guys in here, I am going to be busy trying to keep sin out of your wasted little lives," he said. He then walked off.
"I do not like this guy one bit. We should pull a prank on him when school starts," the one punk noble said to another one.
"I agree," the young man replied.
