Maute Nuela (Part II)

Chapter 1

This time around Robert needed no guide. He knew the way he should go. He trusted his memory to guide him there. His memory didn't fail him either. That was a good thing since this time he was bringing someone along. Someone he considered very special.

If there was anyone he wouldn't mind getting lost with, it would have been her. They'd rather spend time together lost going around in circles than not getting that chance at all. After all, no one ever truly knows when one will get a chance to spend time with their loved ones. They both understood this well. For a little while, they were separated from each other and didn't even know they could be reunited. Now that is had happened, they seemed to be extra careful to appreciate their time together.

Robert pushed the gate opened. "Welcome, my lady, to the town of Maute Nuela. As some would say home to not much," he said with a smile. "Let me guess, that was Chris, wasn't it," she inquired walking through the gate. Robert nodded and April examined the empty streets. "Not much has changed since the last time I was here," April commented watching a tumbleweed pass by.

He closed the gate behind him and turned to face her. "According to what Chris told me, there's a thought that this town used to be alive with people bustling from store to store buying odds and ends. The streets were never empty by day nor night. Some even believe that this place was a city of treasure. When the treasure dwindled, so did the people. Have you heard any more about the legends around the city," Robert asked.

"I've heard many stories about this place, but most assume that this city doesn't exist. It's just a myth to most people. If you hadn't taken me here in times past, I wouldn't even know it isn't just an imaginary place people dream of going to escape the harsh reality that we live in. Every time I've been here, though, it's been the same - deserted," April commented. Robert looked at her oddly pondering a question.

"What, my love," she asked. "Have you been here on your own or just with me," Robert asked tentatively. April laughed and kissed him on his cheek. "Silly boy. I have no sense of direction. I would get lost in a paper bag. I've never been here except with you," she informed him.

Robert sighed. "What's wrong," she asked. "It's just sometimes I wonder what it was like to have been here when there were people here. I feel like I have been here when there were people here. I have visions of it, but I don't know if they are memories or not. It's very frustrating because it makes me wonder what all I've forgotten. Are there things I should know that I don't? Have I forgotten something very important," Robert asked tensing up.

April hugged him. "You haven't forgotten me. That's very important," she commented. "True, but...," Robert replied. "You haven't forgotten that I love you either," April added. Robert nodded. "I love you too," Robert said letting himself soak in the sun of their embrace.

Robert looked up at her and grinned. He suddenly kissed her nose and hugged her tightly. "What," she asked. "Nothing," he replied too quickly. "Right... that's why you have that cat ate the canary look," she noted. "Me? I'm innocent," he told her. April looked at him with a look that said spill the beans or else.

He took her hand and started walking. "Where are you taking me," she asked trying to keep up to him as he started walking faster and faster. "You'll see," he said with a chuckle. "Oh? Is that good or...," she inquired. He stopped and look her in the eyes. He put one finger on her nose and traced the edge of it. Slowly he traced her lips and watched her close her eyes.

A gentle kiss was placed upon his finger. He smiled and let his finger slide from her lips to her chin. He leaned in and planted his lips upon hers. Slowly their lips parted and they sat in ecstacy. After what could have been a century, they parted and they stared into each other's eyes. Floods of emotions filled them. It has been a bit since they were here and there was just something magical about this place for them.

He took her hand once more and walked beside her. "My love, we are almost where I wanted to take you. I just figured that while we were here we should go to one of our spots," he informed her. She nodded and smiled knowing exactly where they were going. It was obvious to her. She remembered all the times they had shared there. She remembered their anniversay together in the garden. She remembered just sitting there next to him there.

They walked into the garden and smiled. He sat down on a bench and look at her. She sat down next to him. The bench was one of two that were in the center of the garden along the circle that was formed by seven stands. On each of the seven stands, there were marking, but none that Robert could read.

"This place means so much to me," Robert said with a happy sigh. "Me too," she said snuggling up next to him. "April, I love you," he told her putting his arm around her. "I love you too," she whispered into his ear and closed her eyes. They slowly melted into each other. This was one of their special spots. A place where the world couldn't penetrate. It was also the perfect place for their first night back to Maute Nuela.
